Carson boys soccer defeats McQueen

The Carson High boys soccer team looks like it has the scoring punch that it was lacking last season.

At least based on the season opener, the Senators appear to have the offense they need after a 2-0 win at McQueen on Wednesday. Carson struggled to score at the end of last season, but got two goals from Margarito Diaz against McQueen. Carson's offense was supported by an outstanding defense.

"It's nice to have one win under our belts to get us started in the right direction," Carson coach Jim Nealis said.

Both goals came in the second half. "The first half we really pounded them," Nealis said. "We hit the post about a half a dozen times.

"We pretty much dominated the game. Our defense was pretty solid. It was pretty much solid all the way around."

Diaz scored off a throw-in by Loren Wooldridge and his second goal was set up by Royal Good after Good controlled the ball for 30 yards.

"His touch on the ball has improved every day," said Nealis about Good. "He's a real hard worker. He goes non-stop for you.

He gives you everything he's got. He's got good field vision."

Carson's defense was led by Brian Arce, Dan Berger and goalie Robby Leibherr.

"He played really well," said Nealis about Leibherr. "Anything that came his way, he was able to handle."

Drew Anderson also played well at midfield and Ernesto Ayala played well at forward. "He was just unlucky," said Nealis about Ayala.

In addition, Julio Deleon played well at stopper, but sustained a pulled quad and is expected to miss Saturday night's home opener against Galena, Nealis said. Jeremiah Schenzel will replace Deleon.
