Obituary: Emory L. "Pete" Marshall

Emory L. "Pete" Marshall, 76, died Aug. 27, 2003. He was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Berkeley, Calif., to Emory and Helen Laughlin Marshall.

He graduated from Acalanes High School in Lafayette, Calif., in 1945. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, from 1945 to 1948, then the University of Nevada, Reno, where he received a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics in 1955.

He married Irene Haase on Dec. 23, 1951.

Mr. Marshall took over the Aldax-Chango Ranch in Carson Valley from his parents in 1959, and raised Suffolk sheep as his father did. He was the assistant agricultural extension agent in Lyon County. He also worked for the extension service of the University of Nevada for 23 years.

He was a 60-year member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. He was the founder of the society's Carson City chapter.

He was on the boards of directors of the Nevada Wool Growers Association, the Douglas-Ormsby Farm Bureau and the Douglas County Weed District. He was a member of the Gentlemen's Autochthonous Book Society.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 on Okinawa.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Bonnie Wilkins; and brothers Mike and John.

Among his survivors are his wife of 51 years, Irene; children Joyce Marshall of Fort Worth, Texas, Jeff Marshall of Sparks, Craig Marshall of Las Vegas and Glenn Marshall of Sacramento; and grandchildren Andrew, James, Zachary and Chase Marshall.
