100 YEARS AGO
On Sunday, Arthur Raycraft arrived in this city to recover the rifle carried by convict Woods, the rifle that did some killing on the other side [ in a Folsom Prison convict breakout]. He and Will Epstein found it in a culvert near the old flume after Woods had described hiding it. It is a big 45-90 gun, such as is used at the state prison in California, showing rough usage. Many citizens looked over the weapon and were just as well pleased they did not join the manhunt.
70 YEARS AGO
The first frost was noted in the western part of town [Sept. 7], as the minimum highway department instrument was at 37 degrees. Several plants were nipped by frost.
50 YEARS AGO
Ernest H. Bath, postmaster of Carson City since 1935, announced his resignation. He will celebrate his 70th birthday on the 27th of this month. Except for 10 years spent in railroading in Hobart Mills, Calif., where he met and married Dora Doty, his entire life has been spent around Carson City. He is a member of the Lions Club.
20 YEARS AGO
Thelma Calhoun, who has done a series of paintings from photos of Chinatown, notes that in its heyday, Carson City's Chinatown was home to 800-2,000 people. The 2,000 figure is credited by the press, while the 800 is from the 1880 census.

Seeliger Elementary School's new principal Janet Bohart believes in a hands-on approach in running her school and , as such, is rarely in her office.
