Yerington and Fernley fall in football

A touchdown pass from about 45 yards in the first half was the only score of the game as North Tahoe beat Yerington 7-0 on Saturday.

"Other than that one play, our defense really played a great ball game," Yerington coach Cody Neville said.

Yerington (0-2) did hurt itself with five penalties -- all that nullified gains of at least 15 yards or more. Even with the penalties, Neville said, "We rolled up quite a bit of yardage."

The Lions also had three turnovers and failed to score twice when it drove inside North Tahoe's 20. But the Lions were also able to stop North Tahoe twice when it drove inside their 20.

"It was an evenly played game," Neville said.

Tommy Menesini played well at fullback and also played well defensively. Showing the state of Yerington football, quarterback Adam Ledbetter is also the starting linebacker where he was a standout.

"That's one tough son of a gun," said Neville about Ledbetter. "He's durable. Hopefully he will be all year."

Another standout was Josh Inserra, who also had two long runs in a 26-6 loss last week at Lovelock.

TRUCKEE 42, FERNLEY 0

A questionable call on a punt was the turning point as Fernley fell at Truckee.

With the scored tied 0-0 with three minutes left in the first half, the officials ruled that Fernley had touched the ball on a questionable call. Truckee was awarded the ball at the Vaquero 10-yard line and scored to take a 7-0 lead. Right before halftime, Truckee scored on a long touchdown pass to take a 14-0 halftime lead.

"We actually played a really good first half," Fernley coach Dave Hart said. "I thought we outplayed them the first quarter-and-a-half."

Fernley also drove inside Truckee's 20 twice in the first half and got down to the Truckee 9 once. "We moved the ball well the first half," Hart said.

Hart praised the play of defensive tackle Shane Nixon, nose guard Joe Snyder and linebackers Matt Kramer, Corey Ryan and Lane Turley. "He was all over the field the first half," said Hart about Kramer.

Truckee led 35-0 after three quarters. "The wheels kind of came off," Hart said.
