Defense was supposed to a place where the Douglas girls soccer team was rebuilding this season.
But based on its performance against at Galena on Tuesday, the Tigers have rebuilt in a hurry. Douglas surprised a powerful Galena team, considered to be one of the best in the Northern 4A, by beating the Grizzlies 1-0.
Douglas outshot Galena 23-6 on its way to the win. The performance was enough for Tiger coach Fred Schmidt to begin comparing his team with recent clubs that have contended for the Northern 4A title on a yearly basis.
"The team is starting to show the same potential," Schmdit said. "I'm just real happy with the whole team. We're starting to come together."
Jennifer Jaggard, Rachel Tappan, Krysten Bartshe and Jessica Maule combined to shut down Galena's two talented forwards, Abbie Walker and Abby LePeilbet. "The four of them were solid all night on defense," Schmidt said.
Allison Chapman scored on an assist from Jessica Greer for the game's only goal. Hannah Sullivan and Christina Bradshaw each had seven shots, but couldn't convert.
"We had a really strong game, but we didn't finish very well," Schmidt said.
Douglas also won the junior varsity game 4-0.
