Eugene "Gene" Halladay, 89, a Yerington resident for the past 51 years, died Sept. 5, 2003, at the South Lyon Medical Center in Yerington. He was born Sept. 26, 1913, in Ohio to Homer and Grace Halladay.
He married Elsa M. Cerlan, and they were together 53 years before she died Dec. 14, 1994.
Mr. Halladay worked as a journeyman carpenter for Anaconda Copper for many years.
He built his own house and was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter and hiker. He was also a prize-winning gardener at the Lyon County Fair. He traveled through all of the United States, except Hawaii, and visited and hiked all of the national parks. He was a self-taught musician, enjoyed golf, and was a member of the Mason Valley Country Club and the United Mine Workers.
Among his survivors are his son, Wayne of Alamo, Calif.; daughters Silver of Antioch, Calif., and Cynthia of Weed Heights; grandson, Kristopher; and stepgrandson Greg Davis.
A funeral was Tuesday at the Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Chism officiating. Burial was in the family plot of Valley View Cemetery.
