The Carson girls soccer team overcame a sluggish first half to win 5-3 at North Valleys on Tuesday.
"We just had a terrible first half," Carson coach Randy Roser said. "We just could not get into the game."
Carson trailed 3-2 at halftime, but the Senators dominated the second half.
"The second half they showed good character," Roser said. "They took it to them pretty hard the second half."
One of North Valleys' goals came in the first half when goalie Allio Otto picked up the ball in the goal box. But with yellow lines for soccer and white lines for football, the official mistakenly ruled that Otto was out of the box.
North Valleys was awarded a free kick and without hesitation scored.
But in the second half, Otto went untested as the defense of sweeper Sammy Valerius, Katie Davis and Kathryn Rogers shut North Valleys down.
Katie Kotter scored three goals, with one coming on a nice crossing pass from Morgan Beam. Cassie Bowman scored on a breakaway and Casey Cano also scored for Carson.
Dayton 1, Whittell 1
Ashley Winter scored a second-half goal as Dayton rallied to salvage a tie in its nonleague match at home against Whittell.
The Warriors led 1-0 at halftime and Winter scored the equalizer on a 40-yard direct free kick in the 63rd minute.
Dayton's record is 1-1-1. The Dust Devils begin Northern 3A play Friday against Lowry in Winnemucca.
BOYS
Dayton 2, Whittell 1
Randy Contreras scored one goal and assisted on another as the Dayton boys won at home against Whittell.
The Dust Devils broke a scoreless tie seven minutes into the second half when Contreras scored off an assist from Jesse Gutierrez. Jader Morales scored two minutes later, assisted by Contreras, to give Dayton a 2-0 lead.
Whittell scored its goal on a penalty kick in the final minute.
"I think defense is our strength right now," coach Tim Logan said. "We've been playing well back there."
Goalkeeper Jason Pass was credited with seven saves while senior team captain Kevin Mezquita led a defensive line that limited Whittell's scoring opportunities.
Dayton is now 2-1, with both wins coming against Whittell.
