Carson volleyball routs Hug

For the most part, the Carson High volleyball team was able to stay focused against an outclassed Hug on Tuesday at home.

There were a few lapses -- especially in the second game -- but the Senators still rolled to a 25-9, 25-7, 25-9.

"I'm happy," Carson coach Daryl James said. "We stayed pretty focused, I thought. We need to keep making ourselves better."

James was able to play different players in different positions and he said his team responded well. "They came in and showed they could handle it," he said.

Hug, though, didn't earn a point in game two as all seven of its points came on missed serves or errors by Carson.

"We'll work on that," James said. "We need to take care of business on our side.

"If we take care of business on our side, we'll be all right. If we don't, then we're in trouble."

Colleen Etcheverria's block was followed by Catherine Brekken's quick hit off of a set from Tabitha Adams that gave Carson a 15-4 lead in game two. Etcheverria's kill extended the lead to 17-5 and Melanie Norvell's five straight service points gave Carson a 23-6 advantage. Adams followed with an ace on game point.

Jenna Mechum's two straight aces followed by Brekken's quick hit off of an Adams set gave Carson a 16-5 lead in game three. Another quick hit by Brekken off of a set from Adams helped put the match away.

Erin Amodei led the serving effort with six aces, Adams had 22 assists and five aces, Kaitlin Brush had 12 kills and four aces, Adrienne Fletcher had five kills, Melanie Norvell had four aces, Lindsey Kern had three aces, Brekken had three kills and Sydney Parker added two blocks..
