Obituary: Freda Johnston

Freda Robert Johnston, 87, of Carson City resident died Sept. 13, 2003, at Alterra Clare Bridge in Sparks. She was born Aug. 30, 1916, in Cantril in Van Buren County, Iowa, to Oliver and Harriett Elizabeth Ellis Langford.

She graduated from Castlemont High School in Oakland, Calif.

She married Darahl Johnston on Aug. 31, 1941, at the Carson City Courthouse. He preceded her in death in December 2000, after 59 years of marriage.

Before moving to Carson City, she lived in Oakland and Hayward, Calif.

Mrs. Johnston worked for Kahn's Department Store from 1928 to1950. She enjoyed camping and fishing in the mountains of California and spent many vacations in Yosemite. She was proud of her garden and yard. She was a gifted fly-tier and enjoyed crocheting. In later years, she enjoyed genealogy. She enjoyed her pet tortoise, Silver, who was with her for more than 45 years.

Among her survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Peggy and many extended family members.

At her request, there will be no service. She will be buried next to her husband in Carson City.
