The annual Bordewich-Bray Elementary School Jog-A-Thon kicks off today when students ask family and friends to support them. The actual jog-a-thon is Oct. 3, starting at 9 a.m. at the Carson City Middle School track.

Proceeds help to enhance the beautification of Bordewich-Bray. Physical education instructor Linda Hurzel is thankful to the parents who have supported their children in the past. Proceeds have funded many extra programs and needed items.

Saturday and Sunday is the 83rd annual Candy Dance craft festival in Genoa. It raises funds for the local fire department and other community improvements.

If you want to cool off, head up to the Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival, three days of tag team grape stomping, a garlic-peeling contest and a celebrity chef sizzling pans cook-off with Wild Goose restaurant chef John Tesar going up against Mark Estee.

Cooking demonstrations, featuring tequila and salsa pairing and chocolate, are also offered. A bonus is tastings of premium wineries of Napa, Sonoma and Australia

October is Cancer Awareness Month. Soroptimist International is having the second annual Stroke for Hope Breast Cancer Awareness Gold Tournament, including prizes. It sold out last year.

The prize for the make-three-putts contest is $50,000 , sponsored by Phil Leathers of Edward D. Jones. Just make a 10-foot putt, a 30-foot putt and a 60-foot putt in that order to win. Wonder if Phil can make those shots? Sounds easy.

There will also be a shootout contest to win $75,000, sponsored by the Horseshoe Club. Call Eagle Valley Golf Course to get in on this one. Help women who, without this fund-raiser, might never have had a chance to survive.

I want to thank Jeff Creelman for the second annual Homeless Golf Tournament. He and his motley crew, including Matt Texieria, raised more than $1,500 to help the CCSD Homeless Program. A big thanks to Bill and Mildred Heinz for donating backpacks to students at Empire Elementary.
