Randy Roser's exchange with freshman Danielle Benamati symbolized what the Carson High girls soccer team was trying to do on Tuesday against Wooster.
Carson looked to work on its offensive attack and for the most part was successful when it defeated Wooster 9-0. But when Benamati had a chance to be selfish and possibly score a goal, she unselfishly passed off -- against the wishes of Roser. Freshmen.
"Be a ball hog," Roser told Benamati after the sequence. "Take that yourself.
"There's no need to drop that off, Danielle. I want you to build that confidence. You can do it. Take it."
Cassie Bowman scored three of her four goals in the first half as Carson built a 5-0 lead. In the second half, Morgan Beam scored, then Krista Kerfeld crossed a pass from the right side, setting up Bowman for a goal.
Benamati was more aggressive on a shot from the left side that forced a Wooster defender to commit a hands violation in the box, giving the Senators a penalty kick. Laura Hale converted and Ashley Mather's 30-yard shot that forced Wooster's goalie to take the ball over the goal line finished the scoring.
Casey Kano also had a goal and two assists, Jessica Wehr scored a goal and Mather, Sarah Stalling and Kerfeld all added an assist.
