Carson High tennis falls against Reno

When it came to this showdown, Reno High showed its still in a league of its own.

Reno rolled to a 43-2 win against Carson High on Thursday at Centennial Park, giving the Senators their first loss of the season. Carson had gotten off to a 7-0 start and was hoping it could be more competitive against the Huskies, but right from the start, Reno took control.

"I didn't know they were this tough," Carson coach Diane Baker said. "But they're just so consistent. They're a tough team. I thought we would do better.

"People say why are they so good? They player year-round, that's the bottom line."

Carson's main highlight of the day was the play of Natalie Rogers, who provided Carson's only win in a 6-2 victory. Rogers also played well in a 5-7 loss and in a 4-6 loss against one of Northern Nevada's top players, Jessie Aiken.

Aiken was two points away from the match when she was ahead 5-1, 30-0. But Rogers fought back to break Aiken's serve and broke Aiken again at love to close to with 4-5 before Aiken held on for a 6-4 win. "She was playing tough," said Baker about Rogers.

Another highlight for Carson came when Simone Kuckenmeister and Emily Ortiz played well in a 4-6 loss.
