Like his brother, Tyson also a winner

While his brother Shawn was busy taking care of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Tyson Estes put together a gem of his own against the McQueen Lancers Tuesday afternoon.

Estes pitched a complete game shutout, striking out six and allowing five hits, as the Douglas High baseball team beat the Lancers 9-0 at Tiger Field in Minden.

"He got ahead all day," Douglas head coach John Glover said. "He threw strikes and dominated."

Shawn Estes, meanwhile, started for the Colorado Rockies Tuesday afternoon, facing up against Randy Johnson to open the season.

"It's happened a few other times where we have started on the same day," Tyson Estes said. "It has actually been good luck for me. Not always for him, but good luck for me."

It worked out well for Shawn Tuesday as well. Estes allowed two hits, and one run - a solo homer run to Luis Gonzales - to pick up the win as Colorado beat Arizona 6-2.

"I didn't really think about it during the game, but before the game I was hoping that he did really good because this is a big game for him," Tyson Estes said.

McQueen starter Will Hodges struck out the side to open the game, and held Douglas to one run through two innings before the Tigers started figuring out his nasty slider.

"We hadn't seen a slider like that all year, except for one of the pitchers at Spanish Springs, and Hodges did a great job of throwing it in his counts when it was in his favor," Glover said. "We didn't do a great job of hitting to the count, and that slider was really surprising us. He did a good job of locating it."

Douglas got things figured out in the third, as Luke Rippee singled and advanced on a passed ball to Chad Walling. Walling walked, and Bryan Miller singled to score Rippee.

Brandon Huff sacrificed Walling and Miller up a base and Chris Honer singled to score the two, chasing Hodges.

Douglas put up three more runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Miller went 3-for-4 to lead Douglas on the afternoon with a triple and two RBI. Honer went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Spike Agosta laid down a perfect bunt in the bottom of the fourth, bringing home two runs on an errant throw by McQueen catcher Grant Henderson.

Douglas (14-0, 6-0) faces McQueen again at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at McQueen.
