Carson softball wins two at tournament

The Carson High softball team had two impressive wins in the Reed Easter Tournament, beating Reed 6-3 and Spanish Springs 3-2.

Carson received a valiant effort on the mound throughout the tournament from Lindsay Farnworth, who replaced an injured Mandy Carvin. Carson went 2-3 in the event. In round robin play, the Senators beat Reed before losing to Logan, Calif., 12-4 and Wooster 4-0.

In the consolation round, Carson beat Spanish Springs before losing to Fallon 5-0 in the consolation semifinals. Carvin was the winning pitcher against Reed and had pitched two scoreless, hitless innings against Logan.

But Carvin came out after feeling pain in her rotator cuff, Carson assistant coach Greg Davis said. Farnworth pitched the rest of the way for the Senators and was the winning pitcher against Spanish Springs. Farnworth also pitched well against Fallon.

"Basically Lindsay was our horse," Davis said. "We used her until she ran out of gas. I'm very proud of her."

Among the leading hitters for the tournament for Carson were Jamie Yenter, Jessica Ashbaugh and Liz Rankl. Katie Davis also had an outstanding defensive tournament at third base as did Jessica Grant at first.

Grant also had a key, two-run single against Spanish Springs. In addition, centerfielder Candice Rutledge made two outstanding catches in the gap with runners on against Spanish Springs. Catcher Ari Gonzalez had an outstanding defensive game against Spanish Springs as well.
