Get rid of junk free during cleanup week

Next weekend could be the perfect time to get rid of that pile of old junk hanging around the side yard.

Carson City residents will get a week to clean up and throw out their garbage at the city landfill for free.

The landfill will accept household garbage, car batteries, waste oil, antifreeze and tires from Friday to May 2 during Carson Pride Week.

"It's a pretty popular program we have here in the city," said coordinator Liz Teixeira.

Friday, for the first time, seniors and the disabled can have a new local company haul junk from their homes for free. The company, "1-800-GOT-JUNK," will hold a ribbon cutting at its first customer's home. Call 887-8898 for an appointment.

Schools, service clubs and churches are invited to hold cleanup events. The city provides heavy-duty garbage bags and will haul away the trash. Call 887-2100 to schedule a pick up.

In the urban area, Carson City Streets Department will pick up bundled yard debris placed on the curbs from April 26-29. No furniture, appliances or lumber will be accepted, and tree limbs must be bundled no more than 6 feet in length. Call 887-2345 for pick up.

Other cleanup week activities:

- Great Western Motors will tow away old vehicles for free if accompanied with a clear proof of title. Call 883-7633.

- Recycle cans, glass, newspapers, cardboard and plastic at the Carson City Landfill. Take recyclable items to Friends in Service Helping, the Ormsby Association of Retarded Citizens or the Salvation Army.

- Household hazardous waste, including pesticides, herbicides, paints and old gasoline, can be disposed of by making an appointment at 887-2190.
