Event showcases youth programs

The Carson City Sheriff's Department and the Community Council on Youth are hosting a Open House and Youth Fair on May 22.

"The fair is an incredible opportunity for families to gather in a safe environment for fun and entertainment while learning about all of the services the community has to support our youth," said Pauline Kiser, director of the Community Council on Youth.

"This gives us the opportunity to showcase what resources the Sheriff's Department has on board as well as generate interest in volunteering," said Mary Wolkimir, Juvenile Substance Abuse coordinator for the Sheriff's Department.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be in the courthouse parking lot at 900 E. Musser St.

"In the next year, we will be initiating a number of programs that will bring officers and youth together, thus helping to create an environment that will promote mutual respect and understanding," Wolkimir said. "This event is another opportunity to work directly with other community stakeholders whose primary purpose is to help the youth of Carson City."

Nine bikes and computers will be raffled off to fund other youth programs that the sheriff and youth council plan to implement.

There will be a bounce castle, dunk tank, bike and helmet safety class, live music, a SWAT team demonstration, dance teams, a martial arts demonstration and a performance by the Brewery Arts Center's BAC Stage Kids.

Members of Carson City Search and Rescue, Sheriff's Mounted Patrol and other organizations will answer questions.

"We are delighted to be partnering with Community Council on Youth in working together as we strive to support the ideas and goals of youth in our community," Wolkimir said.
