Girl hopes to inspire others to help

While attending a school assembly, 10-year-old Devyn Hotho learned how she could help other children. She could donate her hair to Locks of Love.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

It requests hair being donated be healthy and 10 inches in length while in a ponytail.

Friday, Devyn had her long blonde hair cut at The Alternative Hair Salon in Carson City, who recently collected other locks of hair for donation.

The assembly at Pinon Hills Elementary School featured the Douglas County Sheriff's Department who presented a film about kids making choices. At the end of the film was a clip on kids who were helping other kids through Locks of Love.

"Devyn said her reason for doing this was if people see her doing something to help, maybe it would inspire other kids to do the same," said Inger Hotho, Devyn's mom.

Hotho said Devyn's blonde hair was only a couple of inches from being acceptable.

After Devyn's haircut, Hotho said she will probably wear a style like a page boy, but it still should be long enough to put back in ponytail. Devyn plays hockey and insists it be long enough to put back in a ponytail.

Devyn lives in the Johnson Lane area with her mother, father Steve, and brother Jack, 16.
