Yerington third, Dayton fifth in Northern 3A golf

Fernley High's Matt Leestma shot 1-over par 73 to earn a share of the individual medalist honors and Yerington finished third as a team during the Rite of Passage Invitational boys golf tournament on Thursday in Carson City.

Yerington finished with a 414 team total to trail only Tahoe-Truckee (396) and Lowry (407) during the Northern 3A conference event held at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

Sophomore Ryan Rife shot a 76 to finish third on the individual leaderboard, three shots out of the lead. Shawn Owens of Lowry earned medalist honors with his 1-over par 73, one shot ahead of Truckee's Wes Hollabaugh.

Kyle Frade also shot 83, Kevin O'Keefe 84, Jahacido Aguilar 85 and David Whalin 86 to round out the team scoring for Yerington.

Dayton also finished fifth as a team (421), led by freshman Kevin Goles and senior Ryan Rodriguez, who both shot 78. Trent Wood carded an 84 for the Dust Devils.

While Leestma shot 73, Fernley finished 11th as a team with a 452 total.

Tournament host Rite of Passage finished 12th with a 482, marking the first time the Rams have been below 500.
