Investigators say a Carson City man whose body was found in a Storey County canyon apparently was killed by someone.

The body of Daryl St. George Tilley IV, 33, of Carson City, was discovered by a couple Sunday evening as they walked their dog three miles east of Virginia City and some 200 yards off Six Mile Canyon Road.

"Investigators are treating the death as a homicide due to suspicious circumstances," Lt. Mike Allen of the state Department of Public Safety Investigations Division said Tuesday.

Allen declined to reveal what circumstances are being deemed "suspicious," but noted investigators are looking for Tilley's 1988 dark blue Chevrolet Silverado step-side pickup with Nevada plates 521PTB.

He said it's unclear if Tilley went of his own volition to the property owned by a mining company. His body was found just off a dirt road blocked for through-access by large boulders.

Friends and family were "shocked," when they were notified of Tilley's fate Monday evening, Allen said. He said Tilley has an elementary school-age child.

Investigators determined Tilley, who was known to work on a fishing boat in Alaska, was last seen the week of April 12.

An autopsy performed Monday was unable to pinpoint a cause of death, Allen said. "We just don't know. We're awaiting toxicology."

He urges anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity on Six Mile Canyon Road within the last week to contact the Department of Public Safety at 684-7430 or the Storey County Sheriff's Department at 847-0950.
