Advocates form new support group

Advocates To End Domestic Violence is forming a new Domestic Violence Support Group in Carson City. The meetings will be from noon-1 p.m. each Monday. All victims, family members and friends affected by domestic violence are invited to attend. The first meeting will be Monday.

The goal of the support group is to create an open dialogue about issues related to domestic violence. The meetings are free and no registration is required. Call 883-7654 for information.

$2 million jackpot hit in Gardnerville

TOPAZ - Michael Koontz reeled in more than fish when he hit a $2.1 million Wheel of Fortune MegaJackpot during his vacation at Topaz Lodge and Casino in Gardnerville.

"I like the fishing here at Topaz and I always visit Topaz Lodge," said the winner. "I always play the 'Wheel.'"

Koontz, a water worker from Victorville, Calif., had played less than $50 when he hit the jackpot. "I was shocked. I couldn't believe it. Someone had to come over and tell me I had won," said Koontz.

The new millionaire plans to spend some of his winnings on a new motor home. He's also looking forward to an early retirement.

Resource Workshop seeking students

The High Sierra Resources Workshop has many slots to fill for this year's experience June 15-22. A limited number of students will be selected from applications submitted through local high school teachers or through direct contact with the U.S. Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management.

The deadline for applications is May 16 and a registration fee of $100 is due upon a student's acceptance into the program.

The workshop will take 15- to 18-year-old high school students from the forest-urban interface at the BLM's Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City to the heart of the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness for eight days of hands-on, thought-provoking environmental education fun. Students will work directly with natural resource specialists to gain a better understanding and appreciation for the natural world around them and find out about possible career tracks in the natural resource fields.
