Fernley High graduate Matt Lambeth has signed a letter-of-intent to play baseball at Lamar University in Texas, NevadaPrep.com has reported.
Lambeth, a 6-3, 205-pound outfielder, is having an outstanding this season with Mesa Community College in Arizona. He's currently hitting .383 with 34 runs scored, 62 hits, six doubles, four triples, four home runs and 28 RBI for the Thunderbirds.
Lambeth is a 2002 Fernley graduate who starred in football, basketball and baseball. He helped lead Fernley to the 2001 NIAA 3A state title in baseball. While Lambeth has signed with Lamar, he still may have a decision to make this June when the Major League draft is held. Lambeth was a 43rd round draft choice of the Philadelphia Phillies last year and it figures he should be drafted much higher this year.
If Lambeth ends up at Lamar, he will begin next season as a junior at the Division I school, which is having a solid season this year with a 32-11 record.
