A traditional Cinco, or in this case Ocho, de Mayo Fiesta will be presented by St. Teresa Catholic Church's youth group as part its "Helping Our Teens Help Others" project.
Teens want to build a house for a needy family near Tijuana, Mexico. To help pay for this trip, a traditional Mexican dinner will be followed by a servant auction. Trip participants are auctioning some service, including painting, fly-fishing lessons, transferring VCR tapes to DVD format, a catered dinner for 20 and much more.
The Carson City Rotary International is making it simple not to forget the one you truly love - your mother. Mother's Day is Sunday, and Rotary is offering one dozen long-stemmed roses delivered or picked up for $25. To make things easier, they are taking credit cards, checks or cash this year. Last year, more than 6,000 roses were delivered throughout Carson City. Rotarians have raised money by selling roses for more than 30 years.
"An Evening at the Bayou," a New Orleans-style street party, features Charlie Abowd whipping up an authentic Big Easy-style buffet dinner by Adele's Restaurant. With the verandah open and street closed, enjoy Louisiana music by Gator Beat, a popular zydeco/Cajun band from the California coast. Ask Ellen about the famous specialty drinks, including the signature Hurricane.
The Leahy Tee-It-Up Golf tournament was started by Lorraine Leahy, with the help of Joe Tresnit. The tournament benefits a Carson High School scholarship fund in honor of Leahy's children, Patrick and Erin Leahy. The scholarship helps a student at Carson High School every June who cannot afford to attend the University of Reno.
The third annual tournament is June 5 so call to get your foursome in. If you can't make the tournament but still want to support the scholarship, the information is below. Mo & Sluggo's hosts the post-tournament party.
I wanted to thank Girl Scout Troop 253 of Sierra Nevada and their leaders for spending Friday making hygiene kits. Southwest Gas Corp. let them use its meeting room, and employees donated toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, lotion and other items. Dennis Young announced the guys working out in the field would deliver the kits to each school. Troop 253 made hygiene kits for each elementary school nurses' office and Jacks Valley Elementary. The Church of Latter-day Saints Women's Guild also made two huge boxes of kits for Carson High School for Adrienne Jordan's senior project.
