A funeral for James S. Gregg, 89, a Carson City resident for the past six years and former Reno resident, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary in Reno.

Viewing will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Mr. Gregg died July 31, 2004, while visiting in Sacramento. He was born April 13, 1915, in Delta, Ala., to James M. and Lela H. Gregg. He was one of 11 children.

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in January 1935, and was stationed in Medford, Ore. where he learned to be a stonemason. He left the CCC in June 1939, and returned to Alabama.

He married Lena A. Hickenbotham Aug. 2, 1939. She preceded him in death June 16, 1997.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1940, and started his own masonry contractor business.

In June 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy and served until the end of World War II.

He returned to Reno in 1960 and ran his business, Gregg's Masonry, until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of the Church of Christ. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening and being with his family.

Among his survivors are his daughters Carnella Babb of Los Angeles, Pam McNeill of Carson City and Myrle Laird of Sparks; daughter and son-in-law Sylvia and Rick Sparks of Carson City; sons and daughters-in-law George and Merle of Sacramento and Darryl and Kim of Phoenix; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters in Alabama.

Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery following the service.
