Western Nevada voters get their first opportunity to try out the new electronic voting machines this morning.
Early voting opens today and will continue through Sept. 3 across Nevada. But voters in every county except Clark will be using the new touch screen electronic machines by Sequoia Voting Systems for the first time.
The punch card voting machines, used for more than 20 years in most of Nevada's counties, were decertified last year by Secretary of State Dean Heller who directed that all Nevada counties go with the Sequoia machines. Nevada will be the first state in the nation to rely exclusively on the electronic machines and to use the same brand of machine in all counties.
But Glover said he believes voters will adapt to the new machines much more easily than they think and that most will like them.
Polling stations are to open at 10 a.m.
In Carson City, a total of 16 machines are available at the Clerk-Recorder's office in the courthouse. Clerk Alan Glover says nearly half those who vote in the capital do so before election day and he expects voters to be waiting outside when the doors open.
Douglas County Clerk Barbara Reed is providing machines at four different places through the two weeks of early voting. The polling station in the Minden Inn will have polls open every day of early voting.
Douglas will offer three days of voting at the County Administration Building in Stateline today and Aug. 28 and again on Sept. 1. The county will also offer one day of voting in two other locations - the Indian Hills GID board room and Johnson Lane Fire Station.
Polls will be closed in both counties on Sundays.
