A Minden woman whose child was stillborn because of methamphetamine use received probation for a felony charge of unlawful use of a controlled substance on Monday.
Crystal Moreno, 22, will start drug court to wipe the charge permanently from her record. No other charges will be filed.
If she violates her probation or fails drug court, Moreno, whose friends saw her use methamphetamine during her pregnancy, faces one to four years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine.
"You understand if this is transferred to drug court, these proceedings will be suspended for one year," District Court Judge Michael Gibbons told her. "You are willing to do it and complete it?"
"Yes," she said.
During Monday's sentencing of Crystal Moreno's brother, Christopher Moreno on drug trafficking charges, Douglas County Deputy District Attorney Mark Jackson said the woman's baby was dead on delivery.
"It was stillborn, decomposing in the doctor's hands," he said.
Moreno was arrested May 13 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital after she tested positive for meth and marijuana.
Her bail, set at $100,000 cash only, was later removed, and she was released on house arrest.
Jackson said previously there was no way to charge Moreno with the death of her daughter unless he could prove she intentionally took meth to kill her fetus.
Moreno started drug court on Monday right after her sentencing.
