A memorial service for Donald W. Dunipace, 97, a Carson City resident for the past 26 years, will be at noon Sept. 12 at Webster Township Cemetery, Scotch Ride, Ohio.

Mr. Dunipace died April 5, 2004, in Carson City. He was born May 24, 1907, at the family farm near Bowling Green, Ohio, to Robert and Grace Shantz Dunipace.

He completed elementary, high school and two years of college in Bowling Green. At Ohio State University, he majored in physics with a math minor, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1929 and a master's degree in physics in 1930.

He married Eunice H. Davis Aug. 20, 1928.

Hired by Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Co. of Toledo, Ohio, in 1934, he was involved in many projects and retired in October 1962 as director of development. In November he moved to Boulder, Colo., and was employed by Ball Brothers Research Corp. as senior staff scientist involved in aerospace production. He retired again in 1969 and returned to L-O-F where he worked until 1978. He published more than a dozen scientific papers and received 17 patents.

Mr. Dunipace was a member of the American Physical Society and a charter member, former vice chairman and chairman of the Ohio Section. Other longtime affiliations include American Institute of Physics, Pi Mu Epsilon, honorary math fraternity; Optical Society of America; American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Scientific Research Society of America and Physics Society, British. He was an avid reader and enjoyed studying, learning new things and teaching. He enjoyed photography, auto mechanics, home improvement and gardening.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Lava; wife, Eunice; sisters Marjorie Shipley and Dorothy Zoulek; and brothers Wayne, Robert and James.

Among his survivors are his children and their spouses Kenneth and Ann Dunipace of Indiana, Virginia and Hilary Cook of California; grandchildren and spouses Chris Cook and Jacques Etchegoyhen of Nevada; Tim and Sandi Cook of California, David Cook of Florida; Judy Dunipace of Indiana; Steve and Dee Dunipace of Indiana; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Elizabeth Dunipace and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alva W. Smith Memorial Fund No. 206-708, Riverwatch Tower, 394 W. Lane Ave., Office of Endowment, Columbus, Ohio 43210 or to a scholarship fund of the donor's choice.

Capitol City Cremation & Burial Society is in charge of arrangements.
