A memorial service for Sylvia R. Steele, 76, a Yerington resident for the past 44 years, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home in Yerington with Pastor Tom Chism officiating.
Mrs. Steele died of cancer Aug. 24, 2004, at the South Lyon Medical Center. She was born Jan. 1, 1928, in Maryland, to George and Augusta Wheaton Preston.
Mrs. Steele was the first female letter carrier in Nevada. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 20 years of service.
She was preceded in death by a son, Pvt. Roger A. Steele, USMC, in 1969.
Among her survivors are her husband, Leonard; daughter, Linda Riverburg; sister, Dorothy Whiteaker and grandchildren Major Daniel Steele of Florida and Barbara Davis and Lois House, both of Reno; great-grandchildren Brett Davis, Andrew Davis, Kaitlyn and Matthew House and a niece and nephew.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled Veterans of America or the American Cancer Society.
Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
