The Carson High girls basketball team could be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire this week as the Senators host their 24th annual tournament.
If the tournament goes according to form, the Senators could be heading to a showdown for the title against Spring Creek. The Spartans (4-0) are coming off an impressive 70-50 win over Douglas in the finals last week at the Lowry Invitational.
The Northern 3A school is arguably one of the state's best teams on any level, ranking up with the likes of Reed and Centennial.
"I just know Spring Creek is really strong this year," said Carson coach Alana Williams in an understatement.
The tournament begins today at Carson with Elko facing Pyramid Lake at 2:30 p.m. and Fallon scheduled to face Lowry at 4. Carson's junior varsity will be thrown right into the fire as they are scheduled to take on Spring Creek at 5:30. The Senators are scheduled to take on Fernley at 7.
The Carson-Fernley winner will face the winner of Elko-Pyramid Lake and the Spring Creek-Carson JV winner will face the Fallon-Lowry winner in the semifinals on Friday. The tournament concludes on Saturday with games beginning at 9 a.m. and the championship contest set for 1:30 p.m.
In the win over Douglas, Spring Creek sophomore Johnna Ward was impressive in the way she broke down the Tigers' defense. Carson (0-2) meanwhile is coming off of a 74-28 loss to Reed. The Senators opened the season with a 41-39 loss at McQueen. "I would say they're one of the top teams in the state," said Williams about Reed.
Lowry is traditionally one of the top Northern 3A teams and is off to a 2-2 start with its two losses coming to 4A schools Fallon and Douglas. "They're well coached and well disciplined," Williams said.
Fallon's off to a 2-1 start. "Fallon's doing really well," Williams said.
Pyramid Lake is traditionally one of the top Northern 1A teams and will feature a familiar face in Taleah Reymus, who played for Carson last year.
Among Carson's leaders is junior post player Nicole Scott. Williams said she's been pleased with her team so far. "I think they're all just working hard," she said.
