Woman dies in wreck near Silver Springs

A Silver Springs woman was killed early Friday morning in a car wreck 10 miles south of Fernley.

Lillian Lorraine Brewer, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:19 a.m. rollover.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Warren Lee Brewer, 34, and his wife were northbound in a 1996 Mercury sedan near Damon's Curve when Brewer attempted to pass another vehicle.

The road conditions at the time of the accident were icy due to dense fog coupled with freezing temperatures, said Trooper Chuck Allen.

Brewer lost control on the icy curve, causing the vehicle to roll down a steep embankment where it landed on its roof. The passenger side roof of the vehicle was crushed where Lillian Brewer was seated, Allen said.

Warren Brewer was taken to Washoe Medical Center by ambulance where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Allen said when driving in foggy conditions, always drive with headlamps and fog lights turned on.

"When temperatures are near the freezing mark, roadways may appear to be wet when they are icy. Keep in mind that there may be an obstruction ahead of you and traffic approaching may not see you. For added illumination turning on the four-way emergency flashers can help," he said.

Meteorologist Wendell Hohmann, with the National Weather Service in Reno, said drivers should expect patchy fog in the Eagle and Carson valleys with the worst fog likely to be in Dayton Valley and farther east along Highway 50 toward Fallon.

Early morning temperatures will be around19 degrees in Carson City and 15-19 in Dayton. Expect highs today of about 40-45 degrees in the three valleys.

On Sunday expect highs in the 45-50 degree range with lows right around 20-25.
