The young Galena High boys basketball team had trouble in coming back from a semifinal loss at the Maui Christmas Classic in Hawaii, losing to Horizon of San Diego 70-53 in the third place game on Tuesday.
Galena played well in Monday's 51-45 semifinal loss to unbeaten Palo Alto, Calif., but could put solid efforts together on back-to-back nights. "That is something I've got to work on," Galena coach Tom Maurer said.
Horizon jumped out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter before Galena fought back to close to within 30-24 at halftime. But Horizon pulled away in the second half. "That was a very good team and very physical, probably the most physical team we've played," Maurer said.
Horizon also scored on 14 three-point plays by either three-point shots or traditional three-point plays. "They just were flat out quicker and better," Maurer said.
Derek Lorenzen scored 17 points, 6-7 freshmen Luke Babbitt had 13 points and Chad Seidenstricker added 11 points for the Grizzlies.
