The Galena boys basketball coaching staff didn't know how the Grizzlies would respond after a tough loss. The staff shouldn't have worried.
Galena came away with an impressive 68-49 win over Bonzanza on Tuesday in the Las Vegas Prep Tournament. The Grizzlies were coming off an 80-72 triple overtime loss against Southern 4A power Green Valley on Monday night and had to come back and play another solid opponent in Bonzanza at 10 a.m. Tuesday. "They're a pretty respectable team," Galena assistant coach Matt Kromberg said.
The Grizzlies led 35-25 at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half. "It was nice to see the kids bounce back," Kromberg said. "We didn't know how they were going to come out."
Derek Lorenzen had 20 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists and Eric Maupin added 17 points.
Galena plays Central Section power Hanford, Calif., today. With a win, the Grizzlies would again today for the right to play in Thursday's eighth place game.
CHEYENNE 51, CARSON 31
The Carson High boys basketball team played a talented Cheyenne team tough for a half, trailing 20-19 at halftime in the Senators' opener on Monday in the Las Vegas Prep Tournament.
But Cheyenne, consider one of the Southern 4A's top teams, used its athleticism and full-court pressure to break the game open in the second half. Cheyenne forced Carson into 31 turnovers, 18 in the second half and held the Senators to two points during the first seven minutes, 19 seconds of the second half. Jake Jeffers scored eight points to lead Carson.
