Staff Reports
The Carson High boys skiing team now knows where it stands among the top teams in the state.
Carson came away with an impressive 77-76 win over Galena and put up a respectable showing against Reno in an 84-67 loss to Reno High on Tuesday in the giant slalom. Carson, Galena and Reno are considered to be the top three contenders for the state title.
The showing was made more impressive by the fact that two of Carson's best skiers - Mats Boehnke and Devon Anderson - didn't ski because the Senators are trying to qualify as many skiers as possible for the state championships. "We probably could have beaten Reno if they skied," Carson coach Jack Reinhardt said.
Carson (7-2) received a lift with the return of Danny Rotter, who competed in his first event of the year. Rotter placed first against Galena and took second against Reno in 33.7 seconds.
Against Galena, James Reavis took second (33.9), Caleb McCoy placed fourth (35.2), Rob Ghiglieri was 11th (37.1) and Robbie Beassom was 12th (37.2). Against Reno, Reavis was fourth, McCoy was seventh, Ghiglieri was 12th and Beassom was 13th.
For the girls, Carson lost to Galena 90-40 and to Reno 90-58. Galena, which is favored to win the state title, swept the top 10 places against the Senators. The top five finishers for Carson (4-4-1) were Aysia Roberts (43.2), Sydney Parker (43.8), Brooke Conway (43.9), Krista Wisbar (44.8) and Jessica Goddard (47.0). Against Reno, Roberts was seventh, Parker was eighth, Conway was ninth, Wisbar was 11th and Goddard was 12th.
Carson will next face Sparks in the slalom on Friday at Mt. Rose. The girls race will be at noon and the boys race will be at 1 p.m.
