Yankees sign Osborne

Carson High graduate Donovan Osborne is giving it another shot to pitch in the Major Leagues.

Osborne, a 1987 Carson graduate, signed a minor league contract worth $450,000 on Wednesday with the New York Yankees. Osborne will be given the chance to make the Yankees Major League roster when spring training begins later this month in Tampa, Fla.

The left-handed pitcher could have a shot at making the roster as a relief pitcher. The Yankees middle relief was considered to be a weakness last season.

Osborne has gone 47-46 with a 3.96 earned run average in eight Major League seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (1992-1999) and Chicago Cubs (2002). In 2002, his last active season, he posted a 0-1 record with a 6.19 ERA in 11 games before being placed on the disabled list for the remainder of the season.

In 2003, Osborne signed with the New York Mets, but was released during spring training. His best season came in 1996 with the Cardinals when he went 13-9 with a 3.53 E.R.A.
