Locals fare well in 3A wrestling

Fernley's Doug Kornagay and Yerington's Lucas Mudloff and Steven Gutierrez won titles while Dayton placed third as a team at the Northern 3A Championships.

Dayton scored 128 points to place behind Spring Creek (225) and Lowry (243.50). Dayton and Yerington had 10 wrestlers qualify for the NIAA 3A State Championships while Fernley had eight. The top five wrestlers qualified for the state meet.

Kornegay had the most impressive win in the finals, pinning Lowry's Bobby Jones in 14 seconds at 103 pounds. Lucas Mudloff pinned Rite of Passage's Jessi Jephson to win at 215 and Gutierrez pinned Fallon's Jacob Sorenson to win at 140.

Dayton's Jeremy Stanfield almost won the title at 160, losing 13-12 to Lowry's Dilton Ham. In other finals, Dayton's Travis Wade lost to Spring Creek's Lonnie Anderson at 112, Dayton's Chris Thompson lost to Lowry's Adam Sorenson at 119, Dayton's Stephen Novello lost 8-5 to Lowry's Justin Grant at 145 and Fernley's Josh Whitman lost 14-10 to Spring Creek's Kris Torrise at 171.

In third place matches, Dayton's David Grose won at 103, Fernley's Zach Carter won at 112, Yerington's Brandon Soukup lost to finish fourth, Yerington's Jesse Lemos beat Dayton's Shawnn Ebemickel at 135, Fernley's Danny Regalado lost to place fourth at 145, Yerington's Tim Skroch lost at 152, Fernley's Corey Ryan won at 160, Dayton's Robbie Bell won at 189 and Yerington's Ryan Gilmore won at heavyweight.

Those who took fifth were Yerington's David Dixon, 119; Dayton's Josh Avery, 125; Fernley's Dustin Maguin, 130; Fernley's Lannan Ryan, 135; Yerington's Lucas Vaughan, 145, Dayton's Tim Torres, 171, Yerington's Tony Edwards, 189, and Dayton's Sam Armstrong, heavyweight.
