A memorial service for David J. Hurst, 53, a Zephyr Cove resident for the past 17 years, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Edgewood Golf Course at Stateline.
Mr. Hurst died Feb. 6, 2004, in Zephyr Cove. He was born Aug. 23, 1950, in Altadena, Calif., to Donald W. and Virginia Post Hurst.
He graduated from Lodi High School in Lodi, Calif. He received an associate of arts degree from San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif., in 1971 and graduated from California State University, Chico, in 1973. He was a member and business manager of Delta Sigma Phi.
Before moving to Zephyr Cove, he lived in Minden.
Mr. Hurst worked at Harrah's and Harveys for more than 30 years. He started as a slot attendant in 1974, worked up to keno and slots, and ultimately became vice president of casino operations.
He was a member of the Tahoe Community Church. He was a board member of the Boys & Girls Club at Lake Tahoe. He was an Eagle Scout, loved baseball, and grew up playing and refereeing baseball. He also loved golf, sailing, cooking and his family.
He served in the U.S. Army National Guard as a sergeant in the artillery unit.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1995.
Among his survivors are his wife of 22 years, Janice, and son, Matthew Adam, both of Zephyr Cove; mother of Lodi; and brothers Donald W. Jr. of Tacoma, Wash., and Paul of Sacramento.
