Barber strong for Notre Dame

Carson High graduate Justin Barber had a strong weekend to help the Notre Dame men's swim team to a second place finish at the Big East Championships.

Barber, a freshman, placed seventh in the 400-yard individual medley in four minutes, 0.46 seconds and took 13th in the 1,650 free in 15:59.50. Barber was seeded 17th in both events.

Pittsburgh won the title with 746 points to outdistance Notre Dame, which finished with 584 points. When taking away the diving points, Pittsburgh finished 46 points ahead of the Irish in the swimming portion of the competition.

For the Minnesota women's swim team, Carson High graduate Kate Hardt, a sophomore, took 13th in the 100 freestyle in 50.63 in the Big 10 Championships. Hardt qualified 14th for the consolation finals in 50.89 and moved up one spot in the finals.

Hardt also helped Minnesota to a fifth place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:21.62.
