Archie H. Howerton

A graveside service for Archie H. Howerton, 69, a Carson City resident for the past several months, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Howerton died Feb. 23, 2004, in Carson City. He was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Moorsville, MO., to Charles P. and Lottie May Frazier Howerton.

He graduated from high school in 1951.

He married Marilyn Miller in 1962.

Mr. Howerton was in the civil service for 27 years in charge of the armory at Point Mugu Naval Air Station in Point Mugu, Calif., retiring in 2000. He was named employee of the year in 1995. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served for 20 years. He served in Vietnam and received the Vietnam Service Medal three stars, the Vietnam campaign medal, five good conduct medals and the National Defense service medal.

He was preceded in death by sisters Opal Eller and Evelyn Drummond and brothers Alonzo, Donald, Charles, Gordon and Perry.

Among his survivors are his wife of Carson City; sons Donald L. of Caliente, Calif., Dennis C. of Oxnard, Calif., Jerrold J. of Carson City and Archie H. of Bethel Island, Calif.; daughter, Vicky Sue Chappel of Brentwood, Calif.; sisters Betty Curtis of Raytown, Mo., Madline Weidiman of Silves, Ill., Mary Snook of Belton, Mo. and Elma Gaunt of Richmond, Mo.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
