Carson wrestling rolls past S. Tahoe

It could be called the Carson High wrestling team's second "sandwich" match of the season.

With another big tournament coming up this weekend, Carson coach Dean Schmanski didn't want his team to make the same mistake twice. The Senators didn't wrestle that well in a win over North Valleys before it headed into Reno's Tournament of Champions.

So on Wednesday at home, Schmanski didn't want his team looking past South Tahoe to a tournament this weekend at Laguna Creek, Calif. Carson didn't and rolled to a 74-3 win over the Vikings. "We made a point to make sure we weren't looking past Tahoe," Schmanski said.

Schmanski said his team was able to apply many of the techniques it has been working on in practice.

"That's what we're going for from a coaching standpoint," Schmanski said. "We've got a good bunch of smart kids. I'm very pleased. I'm very happy."

South Tahoe's only win came at 119 pounds where Rusty Faulkner beat Kyle Banko 12-6. "He's one of their best kids," Schmanski said.

Other than Faulkner's match, the closest match that South Tahoe had was a 16-6 loss by Josh Reeder to Carson's Micah Whitcome at 152.

Schmanski said a highlight came at 135 where Branden Moyle moved in to win by pin. It was one of eight pins for Carson. Others who won by pin were: Owen Craugh (103), Robbie Bozin (112), Cody Albee (145), Loren Wooldridge (160), Joe Roman (171), Chris Ceccarelli (189) and Jason Klug (heavyweight).

Also for Carson, Kevin Riggin (130) won 19-3 and Travis Lamborn (140) won 20-4. Eric Aguilera (125) and Nick Shine (215) won by forfeit.

Carson's No. 2 team also won five of six matches against the Vikings. Adam Carmazzi (103), Bryan Mustafa (140), Seth Carter (145) and Chris Moltz (171) all won by pin. Jonas Schenzel won 21-8 at 160.

Schenzel will move up to varsity to wrestle at 152 while Whitcome will move down to 145 this weekend. Fallon is also scheduled to wrestle on Saturday at Laguna Creek. Carson has finished ahead of Fallon in two tournaments this year in Reno - the TOC and the Sierra Nevada Classic.

" It will be a good tournament for us," Schmanski said. "It will give us a chance to size up where we stand against Fallon."
