Claude Ulysses Shipley

A memorial service for Claude Ulysses Shipley, 83, a Carson City resident for the past two years and former Reno resident for 52 years, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd on California Street in Reno. A reception will follow at the VFW Hall at Burris and Baker lanes behind the Moana Pool.

Mr. Shipley died Jan. 11, 2004, in Carson City. He was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Herington, Kan., to Claude and Viola Lenhart Shipley.

He attended school in Herington, graduating in 1938.

Mr. Shipley began working for the Department of Defense in Minneapolis in 1939.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941, serving during World War II. He was hired as the service officer handling veterans' claims in Des Moines, Iowa, and eventually became the state service officer. In 1948, he was hired as the state service officer in Reno, serving until 1959 when the governor appointed him as civil defense director for the state of Nevada. He was appointed the veterans' employment representative for Nevada in 1973.

He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the American Legion, the DAV Mount Rose Lodge 40, F&AM, the Shriners and the Lions Club. He volunteered with the Reno Pop Warner Football League and the Boy Scouts.

Among his survivors are his wife of 59 years Jeanne Marie; sons Claude of Tallahassee, Fla., John of Carson City and Todd of Reno; sister, Lois Harrison of Topeka, Kan.; brother, Oliver of Denver; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Veterans Guest House, 880 Locust St., Reno, NV.
