When Derek Lorenzen scores 28 points and Iain Hill adds 23,it's obviously a good bet that the Galena High boys basketball team is going to win.
Lorenzen and Hill combined to score 51 points to lead Galena to a huge 75-58 win over Reed on Friday at home.
"Anytime Iain Hill scores 23 points and Derek Lorenzen is on the floor we're going to win the game," Galena coach Tom Maurer said. "It was a positive game for Iain, obviously a big contribution."
Galena improved to 3-1 in the High Desert League in what Maurer admitted was really a must win for the Grizzlies. With a loss at home against Elko and still having to travel to Elko and Reed and having two games left with McQueen, the Grizzlies really couldn't afford to lose to Reed, which fell to 3-2 in league.
The Grizzlies play at 5 p.m. today at McQueen, which is much better than its 1-3 league mark indicates. "McQueen is going to knock out somebody," Maurer said. "I don't want to be the victim."
Galena also rebounded offensively after losing 40-39 against Elko. "We did a really good job of attacking the opportunities that we're given to us," Maurer said.
Maurer also said Reed struggled somewhat from the floor. "It's going to be a war the next time we play them," he said. "They're not going to shoot as bad as they did."
The Grizzlies also received a strong effort from Ryan Bristol, who played on a broken bone in his foot. "He gutted it out for three quarters and did a great job," Maurer said.
Galena also didn't falter when Lorenzen left the game with 3 1/2 minutes left with leg cramps and the Grizzlies leading by 10 points. "The bench did a great job," Maurer said.
Bobby Contreras added nine points for Galena. Maurer also said his team's rebounding in the second half was a key to the win.
YERINGTON 44, SPARKS 37
The Yerington boys basketball team overcame a 29-12 halftime deficit on its way to the win over Sparks. Yerington held Sparks to eight points in the second half and outscored the Railroaders 18-4 in the fourth quarter. Dylan Johnson scored 14 points for the Lions.
"We just battled back," Yerington coach Daron Wildermuth said. "To hold them to eight points in the second half was a big accomplishment."
REED 50, GALENA GIRLS 33
The Galena girls basketball game stayed with Reed for three quarters before the Raiders, considered to be one of the state's best teams, outscored the Grizzlies 19-8 in the fourth quarter. Reed improved to 4-0 in the High Desert League while Galena fell to 3-1. Caitlin Anderson scored 13 points and Caitlin Crofts added seven points for Galena.
