Grizzlies defeat Colts

Staff Reports

Iain Hill scored eight of his game-high 21 points in the second quarter to help put the Galena High School boys basketball team to a 58-37 non-league victory at home against Wooster on Saturday.

The Grizzlies (17-8 overall) took charge of the game as they outscored Wooster 18-9 in the second period to take a 29-15 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Defense was the key, according to coach Tom Maurer.

"We'd heard Wooster scored 15 points in the last minute the night before (in a 63-60 loss) up at South Tahoe, so we knew they're an explosive team," Maurer said. "We have a lot of respect for (Joey) Golaw, (Sammie) Jones and (Hunter) Smit - those guys can play - so to hold them to 37 points is a pretty good accomplishment."

Golaw finished as the Colts leading scorer with nine points. Wooster was limited to six points in the first quarter.

Though he didn't play in the first quarter, Hill came off the bench to score his 21 points. Derek Lorenzen also scored 15 for the Grizzlies, while Bobby Contreras and Ryan Bristol added six each.

The Grizzlies play their next three league games away from home, starting with a test on Tuesday at Fallon. They travel to Elko on Saturday and then visit Reed on Friday, Feb. 13.
