Cool down with outdoor events on hot August nights

Well, with rising temperatures and plenty of outdoor events, Carson City is home to its own "Hot August Nights." The capital city is especially happenin' this week. Check out this lineup:

Charlie Abowd of Adele's Restaurant and his cousin, Jerry Massad of the Cracker Box, will host a concert Wednesday called "Live Under the Stars."

Held behind Adele's, the event will feature a stage by Chili Bop Entertainment Group and room for about 350.

Headlining is the father of world music, David Lindley. For more than 30 years of performing, he has combined American folk, blues and bluegrass with elements of African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic and Turkish music.

"He's broken out of the mold musically and dodged the pressures of the industry to conform," said Abowd. "My cousin and I couldn't be happier - a night for the whole community in my own back yard. This is only the beginning."

Lindley will take the stage at about 8:15 p.m. after a local opener.

The Sierra Glen Restaurant and Tahoe Creamery is having another big outdoor concert from 7-10 p.m. Saturday. Anyone at the reggae concert on July 3 saw clearly that the Hochs - who run the creamery - know how to party.

The opening group is Redirection. They are all recent Carson High grads who are leaving for college in August: John Stewart on vocals, Aaron Henry on guitar, Danny Rotter on bass and Jeremy Steele on drums. Come join them for a last hometown hurrah.

The headliners are Five on a Dime - as in five guys playing after only 10 practices.

"This is a one-time jam session with a group of good musicians wanting to support Tahoe Creamery," said Five vocalist Kent Steele. Other members are Sean Nebeker on guitar and vocals, Ron Toewes on guitar, Evan Dale on bass and vocals and Chris Buchanan on drums.

The free Sierra Glen concerts are at 1480 N. Carson St. I learned during the reggae event that one way to enjoy them is to get a huge double scoop of their exquisite homemade ice cream and eat it on the dance floor. Call 882-7666 for details.

Two free concerts are being offered by the Carson City Redevelopment Authority this week. Route 66 plays a Friday night street dance in front of the Carson Nugget Casino as part of the Silver Dollar Car Classic. It starts at 7 p.m.

On Sunday at 5 p.m., the local band Groove Fact'ry will play a free show in the amphitheater on the Legislative lawn as part of the Capital City Summer Celebration. For details on these shows, go to www.visitcarsoncity.com or call 687-7410.

June Joplin is keeping a busy schedule at her Comma Coffee. Her booking agent Jen Scaffidi has lined up Out of Mouth, a Seattle-based band, for its Carson City debut from 8-10 p.m. Aug. 7.

The Mile High Jazz Band will play in the outdoor courtyard from 8-10 p.m. Aug. 10 (don't miss the swing dance lessons the hour before).
