Gov. Kenny Guinn flew into Carson City from Las Vegas this evening and was astonished by what he saw of the Waterfall fire.
"They almost didn't let us land," Guinn said.
Carson City Board of Supervisors declared a state of emergency at 3:30 p.m. and requested assistance from the governor.
The state dedicated five Nevada National Guard helicopters to fight the blaze beginning early Wednesday morning.
The fire status was elevated to a Type 1 fire, the highest level of fire emergency, according to the Sierra Front Interagency Wildland Cooperative. The state has enacted an Emergency Operations Center and has sent all non-essential sate employees home.
