Benson competes in heptathlon

Carson High's Amanda Benson finished 17th in the girls heptathlon during the Great Southwest Classic invitational track and field meet in Albuquerque, N.M.


Benson, who just finished her junior year at Carson, scored 2,803 points in the competition held Thursday and Friday at the University of New Mexico. Her best showings came in the 200 (27.99, worth 632 points), 800 (2:38.63 worth 589 points), and the high jump (4-6 worth 481 points), where she finished 12th among the entrants. She also picked up 387 points with her throw of 25-7 1/2 in the shot put and 310 points with a throw of 69-5 in the javelin.


Molly Kennedy, a senior at Hume-Fogg in Nashville, Tenn., won the heptathlon with 4,941 points, highlighted by marks of 5-7 3/4 in the high jump and 18-1 3/4 in the long jump.
