There was a Tigersharks sighting at the 23rd annual Lake Berryessa 1-Mile Open Water Swim on Saturday. That is, a sighting of Carson Tigersharks swimmers out in front.

Jamie Engan led a sweep of the top three places overall with teammates John Wandel and Abby Niehoff in close pursuit for the Tigersharks during the USA Swimming 11-18 age group race, which attracted a field of about 100 participants.

"That was so exciting," Tigersharks age group coach Jackie Boudreau said. "The crowd was so loud and supportive, the pack was coming in and there were our three out front."

Engan, 16, checked in with a time of 20 minutes, 28 seconds to finish first overall and first in the girls 15-16 age group. Wandel, also 16, was just a second behind in 20:29 and Niehoff, 12, finished in 20:33 even though she lost her goggles in the last half of the race.

The Tigersharks occupied four of the top five spots in the girls 15-16 division. In addition to Engan, Hilary Schlager was third (21:01) in her first trip to the Berryessa swim, Rebekah Niehoff fourth (21:49) and Barbara Perkins fifth (22:08).

Kevin Dyer placed fourth in the boys 13-14 division with a time of 21:39, Matt Grunert was 11th (23:40), Scott Wandel 15th (26:24) and Sam Ballard 21st (29:13).

Danielle Judge finished 12th in the girls 13-14 division (23:32) in her first open water swim, Tatum Boehnke was 14th (24:44) and Samantha Ashmore 16th (26:36).
