The Carson Cardinals warmed up for a tough week ahead with a 13-3 win over the Sierra Sun Devils B team on Thursday at Ron McNutt Field.
Tony Fagan and Josh Caron combined to pitch five solid innings and Kyle Mandoki pitched a scoreless sixth inning for Carson (3-1). Caron received defensive help in the fifth inning when Kevin Schlange made a diving stop to prevent a hit and Murph Gardner threw out a runner trying to steal second.
Carson took an 11-3 lead in the fourth on Danny Rotter's two-run single. The game ended in the bottom of the sixth on the 10-run rule when Tony Teixeira belted an RBI triple and scored on an error on the play.
Schlange had two doubles, Jeremy Etchemendy, Rotter and Gardner all added two hits, Jason Alcasas doubled and Joe Skates and Nick Smallman each added a hit.
The Cardinals are scheduled to play at 10 a.m. Saturday at Manogue. Carson will then play in the West Coast Classic in a tournament with two teams from Ohio, two teams from Bakersfield, Calif., and the Sierra Sun Devils A team. The Cardinals will begin play in the tournament at 12:30 p.m. Monday at North Valleys.
The six teams will play in a round robin format to determine seeding for the double elimination tournament, which begins this Thursday.
