Carson players star for Yuba

Former Carson High standouts Ryan Henry, Neil Holmes and Eric Melendez all had a solid day for the Yuba (Calif.) Devil Rays, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays scout team, on Saturday. Yuba split a doubleheader with Elk Grove, Calif., losing the opener 7-5 and winning the nightcap 3-0.


In the opener, Melendez, who graduated this past year from Carson, pitched four effective innings in relief. Holmes, who just completed his freshman year at Yuba Community College, had two hits and an RBI.


In the nightcap, Henry, who redshirted during his freshman year this past season at Division II Western Oregon, was outstanding in relief. He pitched four scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out four and walking one.


Elk Grove features many players from Sacramento City, one of the top Northern California teams this past season. Yuba will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday against the Reno Astros at Moana Stadium.


LES SCHWAB 11, CARDINALS 5


Jonathan Higgins went 2-for-3, scored two runs, drove in two runs and swiped two bases as the Les Schwab Mid-Valley Rockets of West Albany rolled to its third straight victory of the Lithia Motors/Dr. Stewart's Invitational tournament in an 11-5 decision over the Carson Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Legion Field in Roseburg.


The Rockets will face Dr. Stewart's of Roseburg in today's championship game.


Drew Ardaiz went 2-for-4 and scored three runs, Jordan Sim had three hits and Bryan Stone and Mike Hibbert each had two hits for the Rockets. Jordan Hansolvan pitched a complete game, striking out five.


Cameron Leck went 2-for-3 and scored a run for Carson. Murphy Gardner, Jack Jaquet and Sean Costella each scored a run in a three-run fourth for the Cardinals.


Carson faces Napa, Calif., at 1 p.m. today in the fifth-place game.
