A baton carrying the names of Nevada's 99 fallen peace officers made its way to Carson City from Las Vegas on Tuesday in preparation for today's ceremony at the State Peace Officers Memorial in the Capitol Plaza.

Members of the Carson City Sheriff's Department special weapons and tactics team took the baton from Douglas County deputies at the Silver City RV Park in Minden on Highway 395.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run the baton into the Capitol Plaza at the start of the 1 p.m. ceremony.

This is the fifth year the run has preceded the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony and is held in conjunction with the National Police Memorial Week.

Deputies from each Nevada county - beginning with Las Vegas - carried the baton for 99 legs through their towns.

The run is intended to highlight the ceremony, which honors those who lost their lives while serving the state.

About 200 officers from throughout the state of Nevada will be participating in the ceremony

The memorial on the Capitol Grounds was dedicated in 1998 and is a plaque in the shape of Nevada filled in with the 99 names of Nevada's fallen. The first name is that of John L. Blackburn, a sheriff of Ormsby County, now Carson City, who died in 1861 in the line of duty.
