A memorial service for Thomas Williams, 86, of Schurz will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Walker River Tribal Gymnasium in Schurz.
Mr. Williams died May 1, 2004, at home. He was born June 5, 1917, in Fallon to Fred and Lilly Sanford Williams.
Mr. Williams was a rancher and a horse trainer. Family, rodeo and horse training were his life, and he continued to compete in team roping to the age of 85.
He served in the U.S. Army, 94th Infantry Division during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, Combat Infantryman badge and three Bronze Service Stars for participation in the Ardennes-Alsace, Northern France and Rhineland campaigns.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Martinez.
Among his survivors are his daughters Phyllis Williams and Hilda Williams of Carson City and Nenfa Johnson of Schurz; sons Wes, Roger and Fred, all of Schurz; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Harvey Glazier of Schurz.
