A memorial service for Edward R. Moran, a resident of Carson City for the past 32 years, will be at 3 p.m. May 22 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Carson City.

Mr. Moran died May 1, 2004, at his home. He was born Dec. 22, 1917, in Toledo, Ohio, to Joseph and Hazel Pleiss Moran. He was 86.

Mr. Moran received his bachelor of arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University where he was a member of Phi Betta Kappa, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Omicron Delta Kappa, Glee Club and was co-captain of the swimming team with his brother in 1939. He received his juris doctorate degree from Cornell University Law School.

Mr. Moran had a private law practice in Toledo for about 10 years. He then became a partner with the law firm Cobourn, Notnagel, Smith & Moran. He was admitted to the Ohio bar, the Pennsylvania Bar, the Michigan Bar and the Nevada Bar.

Mr. Moran enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served 46 months of active duty during World War II. In 1945, he became 15th Fighter Command JAG in Italy. He returned to the U.S. and transferred into the U.S. Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1964 as a colonel.

In Carson City, Mr. Moran served for eight years on the Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission and served for seven years on the Capital Projects Advisory Committee. He was a 26-year member of Carson City Rotary and was a 33rd degree Mason. Mr. Moran was a world-class swimmer and from 1988-1990 he held the world record in his age group for the 800 meter freestyle.

Among his survivors are his daughters Eliza P. Moran and Stella Stephens and a brother Dr. Joseph P. Moran Jr.

Inurnment will be at Walton's Carson Gardens Cemetery.
